Cummins ISX ingesting dirt in a Case IH Quadtrack
Cummins ISX Teardown: How a Loose Clamp Took Down a Case IH Quadtrac
At Greater Ag Parts, we see a lot of engines come through the door, and many of them fail for reasons that start out pretty small. This one is a good example.
Recently, Melchert Equipment tore down a Cummins ISX engine that came out of a Case IH Quadtrac, and the damage all traced back to something simple—a loose intake clamp.
A Small Problem That Turned Into a Big One
That loose clamp let dirt get past the air filter and straight into the engine. And in ag applications, especially with tracked tractors working in dusty conditions, that’s about the worst thing that can happen.
Once dirt gets inside a diesel engine, it doesn’t take long to start causing damage. It works like sandpaper on internal parts, wearing things down fast.

The First Red Flag: Excessive Blow-By
Before the engine was pulled apart, it was already showing excessive blow-by. That’s usually a sign that the engine isn’t sealing like it should anymore. Operators might notice things like:
-
Increased crankcase pressure
-
Oil mist coming out of the breather
-
Loss of power
-
Higher oil consumption
At that point, it was clear the engine needed to come apart to see what was really going on inside.
What Turned Up During the Teardown
Once Melchert Equipment got the Cummins ISX torn down, the cause was obvious. Dirt ingestion had done its job.
They found:
-
Scored cylinder liners from abrasive contamination
-
Broken piston rings that couldn’t seal properly
-
Excessive wear on the pistons, far beyond normal service wear
Even though the Cummins ISX is a tough engine, it’s not built to handle dirt inside the combustion chamber. Once contamination starts, wear spreads throughout the engine quickly.

Why Intake System Checks Matter
This Case IH Quadtrac teardown is a solid reminder of how important basic intake system maintenance really is. A quick check of clamps and boots can save a lot of downtime and a very expensive repair bill.
A few things worth keeping an eye on:
-
Make sure all intake clamps are tight
-
Look for dust trails around intake connections
-
Replace cracked or worn boots before they fail
Catching something small early can be the difference between tightening a clamp and rebuilding an engine.
